Description

Recreate the beloved Texas Roadhouse Smothered Chicken at home! This recipe features tender, pan-seared chicken breasts smothered in a creamy mushroom and onion gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. 1. Pat chicken breasts dry. Combine flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika in a shallow dish. Dredge chicken in seasoned flour, shaking off excess.
  2. 2. Heat olive oil and butter in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Sear chicken for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove chicken and set aside, tented with foil.
  3. 3. Lower heat to medium. Add sliced onion to the skillet and cook until softened and caramelized (5-7 minutes). Add sliced mushrooms and cook until browned (5-7 minutes). Stir in minced garlic for the last minute.
  4. 4. Pour in chicken broth, scraping up browned bits from the pan. Simmer for 5 minutes, allowing it to reduce slightly.
  5. 5. Stir in heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for 2-3 minutes until sauce thickens. Stir in Parmesan cheese, if using. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  6. 6. Return chicken to the skillet, nestling into the sauce. Spoon sauce over chicken.
  7. 7. Cover and simmer over low heat for 15-20 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through (165°F internal temperature).
  8. 8. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat with a splash of milk or broth, or in the microwave on medium power, stirring halfway through. Avoid high heat to prevent drying out the chicken or breaking the sauce.
