Elevate your weeknight dinners with these easy and flavorful French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes. Packed with caramelized onions and savory beef, this recipe is a family favorite on Betty Flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 46 hamburger buns, split
  • Optional toppings: shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese, toasted buns, a dollop of sour cream, fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. 1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onion and cook until softened and caramelized (8-10 minutes).
  2. 2. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. 3. Increase heat to medium-high, add ground beef, and cook until browned. Drain excess grease.
  4. 4. Stir in salt and pepper. Sprinkle flour over beef and onions; cook for 1 minute.
  5. 5. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Add brown sugar, Dijon mustard, thyme, and bay leaf. Stir to combine.
  6. 6. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce is thickened. Simmer longer for richer flavor.
  7. 7. Remove and discard bay leaf. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  8. 8. Toast hamburger buns if desired.
  9. 9. Spoon beef mixture onto bottom halves of buns. Add cheese if using.
  10. 10. Top with remaining buns and serve immediately.

Notes

Store cooled mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Can be frozen for 2-3 months. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of liquid if needed. Toast buns fresh before serving.
