Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 4–6 hamburger buns, split
- Optional toppings: shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese, toasted buns, a dollop of sour cream, fresh parsley
Instructions
- 1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onion and cook until softened and caramelized (8-10 minutes).
- 2. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- 3. Increase heat to medium-high, add ground beef, and cook until browned. Drain excess grease.
- 4. Stir in salt and pepper. Sprinkle flour over beef and onions; cook for 1 minute.
- 5. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Add brown sugar, Dijon mustard, thyme, and bay leaf. Stir to combine.
- 6. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce is thickened. Simmer longer for richer flavor.
- 7. Remove and discard bay leaf. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- 8. Toast hamburger buns if desired.
- 9. Spoon beef mixture onto bottom halves of buns. Add cheese if using.
- 10. Top with remaining buns and serve immediately.
Notes
Store cooled mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Can be frozen for 2-3 months. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of liquid if needed. Toast buns fresh before serving.
