Description

A simple and flavorful recipe for mashed sweet potatoes, perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal. Easy to make with basic ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes (about 23 medium-sized)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 24 tablespoons milk or heavy cream (start with 2 and add more as needed)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Pinch of black pepper, or to taste
  • Optional: 1-2 teaspoons brown sugar or maple syrup for a sweeter mash
  • Optional: A dash of cinnamon or nutmeg for warmth

Instructions

  1. 1. Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly. Peel if desired and cut into uniform 1.5-2 inch pieces.
  2. 2. Place cut sweet potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water by about an inch, and add 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  3. 3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until fork-tender.
  4. 4. While potatoes cook, prepare other ingredients.
  5. 5. Drain water from pot and let potatoes sit for 1-2 minutes to steam dry.
  6. 6. Return pot to very low heat for 30 seconds to 1 minute, stirring, to dry further.
  7. 7. Remove from heat. Add softened butter and mash until incorporated.
  8. 8. Gradually add milk or cream, 2 tablespoons at a time, mashing until desired consistency is reached.
  9. 9. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in optional sweeteners or spices if using.
  10. 10. Serve immediately.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave with a splash of liquid, or bake in the oven.
