- 1 pound lean ground beef (90/10 recommended)
- 1/2 white onion, finely diced
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 cans tomato sauce (8 oz each)
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- 8 ounces sour cream
- 1 package egg noodles (12 oz)
- 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a 9×13 casserole pan with non-stick cooking spray.
- Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions to al dente, then drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the beef with the diced onion until browned; drain excess grease.
- Stir in garlic, salt, pepper, tomato sauce, and sugar, then simmer for 10-15 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes, then stir in sour cream until combined.
- Gently fold in egg noodles and 1 cup of the cheddar cheese until evenly combined.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole pan, top with the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned, broil for 1-2 minutes for a deeper color if desired.
- Let sit for 10-15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a lighter version, use ground turkey or chicken. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for 3 months.
